| The Mountain
(the Niesen as seen from the Suld Valley), Auguste Baud-Bovy, 1895 (Musée d'art et d'histoire, Geneva) |
Aeschi lies on a ridge between the Morgenberghorn and Hondrich hill. Aeschi thanks the Kander and Aare glaciers for this ideal position, because at the end of the last ice age (about 10,000 years ago) they left a large middle moraine here as they proceeded to melt back up into the Alps. It is difficult to believe that almost the entire area of our present day community was covered by an enormous layer of ice that rose to an elevation of about 1,400m (4,550') above sea level. Today, the village of Aeschi lies approximately 850m (2,760') above sea level. The community's boarders reach into the Kander valley, encompassing the village of Emdtal and part of Mülenen. Mount Niesen stands out as "trade mark" for our area. In 1895 Baud-Bovy captured him from the Suld valley looking west on canvas for future generations. The Niesen can not be mistaken for any other mountain. His pyramid shape is easy identifiable from the Bernese Middle Land. From almost every location in Aeschi you enjoy an unobstructed view of the Stockhorn, Langenberg and Belpberg to the Jura Mountains and on toward the northwest and over Lake Thun to the Sigriswiler ridge, Justis Valley und Niederhorn. Toward the east the view takes you over Lake Brienz to the Brienzerrothorn. The most beautiful panoramas are enjoyed from the Aeschiallmend, just above Aeschiried.
The community of Aeschi encompasses an area of about 29.37km2 (if you didn't learn the metric system in school, I'm sorry). Approximately 557ha of this are forests. Aeschi's population today is 2,004 (May, 2010, of whom 1,502 are of voting age (18 and over)).
According to the census figures of 1990, 1,847 people lived in Aeschi in about 640 households. Approximately 31% were under the age of 20, 29% between 21 & 39, 25% between 40 & 64 and 15% over 65 years of age. About 37% of Aeschi's inhabitants were fully und about 10% were part time employed. Approximately 6% of the total population were employed in the agricultural sector , 9% in industry and crafts and 28% in trade, tourism and transportation. Out of the 867 gainfully employed people, 191 were self employed (22%). This high rate of self employment is an indicator that Aeschi has many efficient small businesses in the crafts and trade sectors. Another important economic sector is tourism. Besides the hotels, there are a good number of restaurants who can satisfy everyone's palate and their pocket books, too.
Aeschi is, despite being a part of the county of Frutigen, more oriented toward Spiez and the region of Thun. There is a good bus service (every 30 minutes) by way of Krattigen or Hondrich/Spiezwiler to the train station in Spiez. For almost all routes of travel Aeschi enjoys a very good central location. The motorway A6 is only 6 minutes away.
